What is my location based on my IP?
When you land on this page, the tool reads your public IP address and cross-references it against geolocation databases to determine where your connection is coming from. What you see as your location is not pulled from your device's GPS or any sensor. It comes entirely from the network infrastructure your internet traffic passes through. That distinction matters, and it explains a lot of the questions people have when the result does not match exactly where they are sitting.
My location as shown here reflects the point where your connection enters the internet, which is usually a node or exchange point managed by your ISP. If you have ever wondered what is my location according to a website or online service, this is exactly the answer they would get when you visit them. For most people in urban areas, that is close enough to be useful. For others, especially on mobile or in rural areas, it can be off by a noticeable margin.
Why your current location might not match where you actually are
This is the thing most tools do not bother explaining, and it leads to a lot of confusion. IP geolocation does not track your physical device. It identifies the network infrastructure your traffic passes through, and that infrastructure may be in a different city from where you are.
If you are on a home broadband connection, your current location as shown by IP will usually land somewhere in your city or metropolitan area. If you are on mobile data, the result can be significantly further off because mobile carriers assign IPs from regional pools that sometimes cover entire states or countries. And if you are connected through a VPN, the location shown will be wherever the VPN server is, which has nothing to do with where you physically are right now.
What my location now actually shows you
The tool displays several pieces of information derived from your IP address. The country is almost always accurate. The region or state is reliable in most cases. The city is where things get more approximate, and it should be read as a general area rather than a precise address.
Beyond the city, you will also see your ISP name and sometimes your approximate coordinates. Those coordinates are not your actual GPS position. They are a central point within the geographic area your IP is associated with, often the center of a city or the location of a network exchange. Treating my location now as a rough indicator is the right approach. It tells you what the internet thinks about where you are, not where your device physically sits.
IP location vs GPS location: not the same thing
A lot of people land on this page expecting something closer to what their phone's maps app does. GPS location uses satellite signals and device sensors to pinpoint you within a few meters. IP-based location works with network data and routing tables, and the precision is a completely different ballpark.
That does not make asking whats my location by IP useless. For most practical purposes, knowing the country, region and approximate city is enough. It is useful for checking what location a website sees when you visit it, and whats my location from a VPN server is one of the quickest ways to verify your VPN is routing correctly. What it cannot do is tell you which street you are on.
When IP location is useful and when it is not
There are quite a few situations where checking my current location via IP is genuinely helpful. If you are troubleshooting why a website is serving you content meant for a different country, your IP location is the first thing to check. Knowing my current location from a network perspective helps you understand exactly what third-party services see when you connect. Where it falls short is anything requiring real precision. Delivery logistics, emergency services, turn-by-turn navigation, none of those can rely on IP-based location. For those use cases, a GPS-enabled device and the browser's Geolocation API are the right tools. IP location is a network-level approximation, and it is best used for network-level questions.
Why different tools show different locations for the same IP
You might have noticed that checking my location right now on two different sites gives you two different cities. Running the same search for my location right now on another tool a few minutes later can even produce a third result. That happens because there is no single authoritative IP geolocation database. Different providers, MaxMind, IP2Location, ipinfo.io and others, build their databases independently using different data sources and update cycles. Each one may have slightly different mappings for the same IP ranges.
ISPs also reassign IP blocks over time, and there is always a lag before geolocation databases reflect those changes. A block that was used in one city six months ago might have been reallocated to another region, but some databases still show the old location. None of this means the tools are broken. It means IP geolocation is an estimation built from incomplete, constantly changing data, and different tools make different estimates.
